What have you done for Literacy lately?

Game day Saturday, November 3, some Ohio Buckeye fans passed up watching their team to attend the seminar of First Book University reviewing recruiting, fund raising, and grant making. The seminar was held in Columbus at the Ohio Department of Transportation building.

For October 2007 the I Am Foundation shared books with Tennessee and the Gulf States to make sure the children of Hurricane Katrina had words shared with them, and to let them know they were not forgotten. Catch up with these efforts...

"Thank you I AM Foundation! We are so pleased to have these books for our kids. When we opened the boxes yesterday and the kids told us it was better than Christmas. The best part was they wanted to know if they could take a book for their brothers and sisters too since they had no books at home. It brought a tear to our eyes. Thanks again, you have no idea what this did for our very well deserving kids!" -Alex Bushue, 5th Grade Teacher, Kinnaman Elementary

The above is a great example and here is a way we can help when we are not able to purchase all new books or contribute to such a donation. If you have books from when your child was small or you have favorite books that you have read over and over, maybe it is time to clean out those closets and make room on those shelves for some new books! Fill your gift box with all those gently used books and carry them to your local Library or Good Will. Pass the reading on.

Thee Eleventh Hour of The Eleventh Day of The Eleventh Month.

On November 11, we celebrate and remember all those that serve and have served their country. It is Armistice Day or Remembrance Day and the anniversary of the Armistice that ended WWI. In the United States of America we announce it as Veterans Day. It is Veterans as in plural, and not Veteran's or Veterans'. It is a date to honor the lives that have been given for the price of what our country has become, and in doing so we should not only honor them in our hearts and mind but also with our actions. Everyone knows the price of freedom is a high one, and should not be taken lightly. The choices made by our country as a whole should always pay homage to the memory of their lives that surely were not lost in vein.

What more can I say? Let us give thanks...

1789 - A National Thanksgiving Proclamation written by President George Washington
"Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country...for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed...and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions -to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually... To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best."
