There once was a candy maker who wanted to make a candy that was a witness to Christ and something sweet to be enjoyed at Christmas time. He made a hard candy to represent Christ as the rock of ages. The candy maker rolled the candy into the shape of a 'J' for Jesus. When he turned the candy upside down, it reminded him of a shepherd's staff, as Christ is the good sheperd. The candy maker thought of the colors and decided the candy should be white for the purity of Christ. He spun a bright red stripe to represent the blood of Christ, and added three other red stripes for the stripes Jesus received when he was beaten and whipped for us. Some candy canes include a green stripe, and this reminds us that Jesus is a gift from God. The flavor of the candy is peppermint, which is a lot like hyssop. Hyssop is used for purification and sacrifice. Mint to remind us that Jesus is pure, and of the sacrifice he made.
