There was no room for them, and they were turned away. It may be the only part of this story that never changes. It seems to be the common factor of how sometimes the greatest gift of love given freely is too often times rejected. In a stable for keeping animals, Mary gave birth to Jesus. She wrapped him in pieces of cloth and laid him in a manger with hay.
Mary was so young when Gabriel came to her and told her the news that she would give birth to a baby and he would be called Jesus. Although he was not the father of the baby, Joseph did believe Mary because of his faith and he also received the message in a dream. Soon after Joseph and Mary were married, they both had to travel to Bethlehem for Joseph to pay a special tax. If he could have waited until after Mary gave birth, he surely would have. It was crucial that they both arrive together and the time was not negotiable. They had to go. Mary was close to having her baby, and she rode for days on a mule through the hills of Gallilee.
Far away, there were three wise men that studied the stars. One bright star in particular had captured their attentions. As they studied the star, it became clear this was the announcement of a new ruler, and to Bethlehem they began their journey. They went straight for King Herod, believing the new born would be in the King's Palace. Before leaving the King, they were asked to return when they found the new born. These men were very wise, and they did not return.
Near by, shepherds tended their flocks and they all saw a bright light in the sky. It was frightening to them but an angel spoke and calmed them telling them to hurry, that the son of God had been born and they would find him in Bethlehem.
Arriving, the wise men and the shepherds knelt down before the babe in the manger that wore the rags and they worshipped him. The wise men brought the baby gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The wise men avoided going back to Herod and Joseph took his family to Egypt. King Herod had ordered the death of the new born Jesus and when he could not find him, he ordered all baby boys in Bethlehem to be killed.
